As we leave early August behind and head toward fall, the cooler temps brought on by more rainy weather have made for more productive late-summer fishing. With low, clear water, the fish are spooky, but with the right fly and technique, fooling them is certainly doable. Most of what we have been fishing—both on the Green and New Fork rivers—has been small mayflies and terrestrials. Most of the larger aquatic insects have stopped hatching, but that doesn’t mean the trout haven’t keyed in on other forms of protein.
